Dark Chocolate IS Taking Over the World
and it is starting in the Bay Area. Having just returned from a family vacation to Berkeley, I am still taken aback by the chocoliciousness of the environment. I browsed in a store that sold “Chocolate Body Frosting,” rode right past “Ghiradelli Square” on the electrified bus system, and found myself painting in the local children’s museum, MOCHA (”Museum Of CHildren’s Art”). Most importantly, I toured the Scharffen Berger chocolate factory, just 6 minutes away from my Aunt’s home. Scharffen Berger doesn’t only sell dark chocolate, but after hearing their “story” (retired doctor wants a new gig, wine salesman needs a new label….lets make old fashioned chocolates in our kitchen…) I realize that dark chocolate is their purpose. Let me explain, in order the be called “bittersweet” or “semi-sweet,” chocolate needs to be at least 35% cacao. This place sells milk chocolate with a higher percentage than that! So, I’m back to work with my bag of samples in hand. I’ll keep you posted.
